Still trying to mesh Led Zeppelin with Yes, Queen released their second album riddled with mythical songs
about ogres, fairies, and battling queens. The really interesting thing is that the band refused to use
synthesizers. That means that any strange effects heard are done on guitar through a series of effects
pedals, layering, and studio tricks.

Trying to keep the success of Opera going, they almost did it with this one. Something was missing, though,
and it wasn't quite the landmark album they were hoping for.

This is a strange record. Not too cohesive, there are a bunch of different styles here. And sporting events
would never be the same again. Every arrogant team in the world adopted the first two cuts, and they are
still pounding them out every week in every stadium in the world today.

Probably the last good Queen album released. I keep seeing the crowd at the Live Aid concert in Wembley
Stadium all in unison singing and clapping 'Radio Ga Ga' with the band. Queen owned that day.

Sadly, Freddie Mercury's last album before he succumbed to AIDS. What a tragic loss to the world and the
music industry. There will never be another Freddie . . .
That said, Queen kind of goes out with a whimper. Granted, at times Freddie was too weak to sing, though
his voice still sounds strong. The approach to the songs is melancholic - you just have a feeling that the band
knew it was a matter of days before Freddie would die. And, if legend is correct, he did just that days after
the album was released.
