Akron, Ohio's own! Plus, one of my "Brushes with Greatness" - Chrissie Hynde went to Firestone High
School - my alma mater! Granted, I graduated 15 years after she did, but still! Okay, back to the music -- this
isthis is arguably one of the greatest debut LP's of all time! Although she came close a few times, Chrissie
would never again write a batch of songs as cohesive and brilliant as this first album. A must have!

The public cry for more Pretenders music dictated tht this EP be released. A teaser of great things to
come . . . and 'Cuban Slide' is one of the greatest joys I've ever experienced.

Usually sophomore efforts pale in comparison to their incredible predecessor, but not in this case. More
melodic than the first record, this one proved that Chrissie Hynde was on the way to becoming a dominant
force in modern music. Today, she's an icon. Sadly, James Honeyman-Scott (guitar) and Pete Farndon
(bass) both died of drug overdoses shortly after this album was released.

Carrying on after the deaths of James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon, Chrissie Hynde assembled
a very competent quartet (original drummer Martin Chambers also returned) and recorded one of the
Pretenders' most successful albums. Not the powerhouse the original lineup was, but they still got the spirit
of the band across, but with a more domestic, mature bent to the songs.

For whatever strange reason Chrissie sacked everyone, kept Robbie Macintosh, and hired the drummer
from Haircut 100 (!), resulting in a mediocre album. Sure, there were some high points, but it just didn't feel
like a band anymore.

For all intents and purposes, this is a Chrissie Hynde solo album. The only other close resemblance to a
Pretender is drummer Blair Cunningham. Billy Bremner (Rockpile) comes close, having played on
"Back On the Chain Gang" and "My City Was Gone" in 1982, but that's it. A stumbling block that Chrissie
was thankfully able to recover from.

After four long years (really eight since the last record was really a solo album), Chrissie Hynde finally got
her act together and re-hired Martin Chambers (drums) and recruited two blistering newcomers for a truly
inspired Pretenders album. The only drawback is that there are too many slow / ballad-y songs for me. But
the rockers . . . . fantastic!

An album that starts out fantastically well, then peters out with songs that are too mellow. Maybe if the track
order was different it would sound better. And with the wonderful technology of CD players, you can play
around with the order and come up with one that flows better.

While starting off very strongly in the rock 'n' roll department, this record quickly dissolves into a mellow,
reggae-type album. Interesting choice, but Chrissie Hynde needs to stay with her strengths and write some
rockin' pop tunes.
