Marketing genius or just plain lucky? A wonderful cash-in on the British Invasion of the 60s that would remarkably have its own cultural significance. With tunes by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, and musical direction from Don Kirshner, how could they lose?

Almost backfiring, this album's release angered the band and was proof for the pundits that The Monkees were nothing more than manufactured. Colgems Records released this album without the band knowing it - legend says they were in Cleveland, Ohio in January 1967 for a concert when they went into a record store and saw this album on the shelves. What happened next was also legendary - and possibly fatal to the band.

Their best album! Ironically, the only one (until 1996's Justus), where they played all the instruments themselves (okay, the string quartet is NOT The Monkees, and the producer helps out on bass). Legend has it that Michael Nesmith was so infuriated at Don Kirshner's strangehold over the group's musical ambitions, that Nez punched a hole in the wall and yelled, "That could have been your face!" Colgems then sided with the boys, firing Kirshner. What followed was an album of great songs, with a wonderful 60s garage-band feel to it. If it weren't for The Doors and Hendrix debut LP's, and The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album, Headquarters would have been more successful.

Another fantastic record, and another group effort. However, outside musicians and producers were becomng more evident. Nonetheless, this is The Monkees' finest album.

Unfortunately, this record was practically phoned in by the boys. Things were starting to fall apart in Monkeemania, and this was the first piece of evidence.

The soundtrack to the massively weird, wonderfully schizophrenic film, Head. An aural replica (almost) of the visual rollercoaster ride of The Monkees' demise, orchestrated by the Monkees themselves. Classic.

Bootleg of The Monkees' only television special. Poor quality, but still nice to have unreleased songs to play. This was Peter Tork's last Monkee related project until they re-grouped in 1986. Album also includes Julie Driscoll, and Brian Auger & Trinity.

The first Peter Tork-less Monkee album. Free from the constrictions of their TV show, the boys also found they had no advertising outlet for their music. Plus, the 'serious' music scene continued to ignore and crucify The Monkees every chance they could get. This album never stood a chance.

This record stood even less of a chance than their previous one. Continuing on as a trio, The Monkees Present . . . was originally intended as a double album (one side for each Monkee spotlighting their talent and influences; the 4th would be a group effort). Needless to say, the demand was not great for a new Monkees product, so the boys gutted the project and released the best cuts, including the classic 'Listen to the Band'.

It always struck me strange that the last Monkees record (during their original formation) featured the actors of the group and not the musicians. Basically a contractual obligation, Micky and Davy weren't even in the same studio when recording. One last stab at bubblegum music and that was it. What roared in like a lion, was dragged out like a lamb's lifeless carcass. Shame, really.

A hastily created compilation courtesy of the geniuses at Arista Records. Really don't know why I got this, but I did. Notice the painful attention to detail the folks at Arista paid to the track listings ('Papa "'Gean's" Blues'). Gotta love a staff that loves its research (note the sarcasm here). Seriously, though, the collection of songs here is pretty definitive.

The one that re-started it all! Along with MASSIVE exposure on MTV and Nickelodeon, The Monkees came back with a vengeance after breaking up 16 years earlier. Their reunion tour was a sellout (held the attendance record at Blossom Music Center outside of Cleveland for 1986) and their records were all over the charts . . . AGAIN! Their first full-length album in 17 years! Okay, severely overproduced with that mid-80's stamp of no low end in the mix, and Davy still handles the sappy love songs, but The Monkees succeeded in suing Columbia Pictures for ownership of the name, AND released a new album to huge success. PLUS, they completed another hugely successful tour in support of the album. Unfortunately, history was about to repeat itself . . .
